Isn’t it exciting when what you were told was going to happen actually happens? That happened for the disciples after Jesus told them this in Luke chapter 24, starting in verse 45:
45 Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. 46 He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
This passage reads like a divine checklist.
It was written, Check
The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, check.
Repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name, check
To all nations, check
Beginning at Jerusalem, check.
You are my witnesses, check
I am going to send you what my Father promised, the Holy Spirit, check!
What Jesus promises, He delivers on. It is such a place of confidence and security, because we know that God is faithful to do what He has promised in His Word. The promise of the Father, the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, happened just like Jesus said. Check, check, check!
The 120 waited, and then the Holy Spirit made His grand entrance, like a wind from heaven, and fire those who were there were all filled and began speaking in tongues as the Holy Spirit gave them the Words.
And it still happens today. THe initial grandeur of wind and fire, came only the first time, but a supernaturally filling empowering believers to be witnesses, still happens every day as people around the world are asking for this wonderful promise.
We can ask to be filled, check!
We receive the gift that was promised, check!
